TIMARU SALE

(Press Assn.-

PRICES FIRM, COMPETITION STRONG AT TIMARU CROSSBREDS LITTLE WANTED

-By Telegraph — Copyright).

TIMARU, Monday. j The first wool sale of the season ! took place this morning, when 7762 bales were offered, compared with 5888 bales last year. Prices were on a par with the rates • at Christchurch last week. Compared with the opening sale -last season, however, halfbreds showed an advance from ld to lld, but crosshreds were eheaper. The beneh of buyers was fully representative of wool-consuming countries, but competition came chiefly from the United Kingdom and Continental huyers, with representatives of New Zealand mills picking up odd lots suitable for their requirements. ■ On account of the adverse conditions the wool was not as satisfactory as that of last year, and included few, if any, really super lots. Half-breds were keenly competed for and sold at prices much on a par with the prices ruling in Christchurch. On the other halid crosshreds were more or less negleeted, and to effect saies in this class very low prices had to be accepted. Pieces and bellies eommanded relatively higher prices than fleeee wool, due to keen competition. The low prices ruling for crossbred are a reflection of the prices realised in the North Island, the demand at present being for fine wools. Passings were fairly heavy. Only one catalogue, that of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, Company, Limited, was completely sold. The top price was 10 |d for a halfbred clip from Albury. Three-quarter-breds made up to 9id and Corriedale 9d and the toi price for merino was 8d. The high- | est price to crosshreds was 7|d.
