EXECUTION OF COATS
FIXED FOR NEXT THURSDAY MORNING TOOK NEWS QUITE CALMLY WELLINGTON, Saturday. The execution of George Errol Coats, for the murder of Phyllis Avis Symons has been fixed by the sheriff, Mr. Samson, to take place at Wellington Prison, Mount Grawford, at eight o'clock on Thursday morning. The warrant signed by the Gover-nor-General, stating that His Exceliency did not intend interfering with the sentence of death being carried out, was received by the sheriff this morning, and within a short time of its arrival Mr. Samson, in company with the deputy-sheriff, Mr. Rhodes, left for the prison, where Goats was informed of. the Governor-General's decision. "Coats took it quite calmly and said 'Thank You'," said Mr. Samson j to a reporter on his return from the prison. It is over eight years since a person conneeted with a murder was executed in Wellingtqn. The last hanging was in the old Terrace Gaol, since demolished. In May, 1923, Daniel Richard Cooper was found guilty of the Newlands baby farming case and was hanged.
