CANNOT BE WASTED
MONEY ALREADY SPENT ON THREE COUNTY ROADS "After spending £6000 or £7000 on these roads they have cut us off altogether. The roads have got to be maintained, if they are left, they will wash away in no time," said the chair-
man of the Rotorua County Council, Mr. H. P. Ford at Wednesday's meeting of the Council, when a letter was received from the District Public Works engineer, indicating that owing to the present financial conditions, the Government could not see its way to alter its decision in connection with the decreased subsidies on the Wairoa, Waimangu, and Okareka Roads. The County Clerk (Mr. A. Bellingham), said that this year the subsidies had been cut down to such an extent that the Council had not sufficient to meet the amount spent already. The County engineer (Mr. T. S. Robertson said that this road work was new and not yet properly consolidated. It required a certain amount of maintenance to establish the work already done. Several councillors expressed the opinion that the Council could not allow the lai-ge amount already spent to be wasted, despite the fact that the Department had deprived it of maintenance moneys. It was finally suggested that the roads should be maintained by relief labour under No. 5 scheme, and that the costs of transportation of this labour should be met out of the County general account, until such time as the Department could relieve the burden. The suggestion was adopted, and it was decided to write to the Minister of Public Works setting out the position with regard to the roads in question.
