THRONE CLAIMANT
SCION OF HOUSE OF BOURBON DIES IN PARIS. DON JAIME OF BOURBON. The sudden death of Don Jaime of Bourbon, Duke of Anjou and Madrid, the head of the Carlist braneh of the Spanish Royal Family, took place in October at the age of 61 at his Paris residence. . Ten days previously Don Jaime and his counsin, King Alfonso, had come to an agreement for the two branches of the family that they represent to show a united front against anarchism and Communism in Spain. This agreement, however, did not in any way affect Don Jaime's claim to the Spanish Throne, which he inherited from his great- grandfather, Don Carlos, brother of Ferdinand VII. The lat- $ ter, who had no son, in 1883 auto- 1 eratically abrogated the Salic law — | until then always in fo'rce in Spain — | in order that his daughte'r, Isabella, | might come to the throne after him. i Don Carlos took up arms and the | feud that led to two civil wars began. | Don Jaime was born in 1870, and § succeeded to the rights of his father f in 1909. JBCe had reeeived military 1 education in Austria, entered the Rus- g sian Army, and served as colonel of | the Hussars of the Guard in the Rus- § so-Japanese War. He was the senior = of the direct descendants of Louis | XIV of France and Philip V of Spain, | J and styled himself "supreme ehief of | i the whole Royal House of Bourbon," | using the arms of the House of | France. His chief residence was the | castle of Frohsdorf, near Vienna, | which Re inherited from the Comtp g Chambord. | It is now revealed that the recent | reconciliation with King Alfonso took | place on the initiative of the latter. c On September 23 he called on Don 1 Jaime and a long conversation took | place. Two days later Don Jaime, | travelling to Fontainbleu, invested | King Alfonso with the Order of the | Saint-Esprit, of which the Carlist | chief was by inheritance grand jnas- 1 ter. The claim to the throne now 1 passes to his uncle, Don Alfonso of f Bourbon, younger brother; of the last | Don Carlos. Don Alfonso, who lives | in Vienna, is 82, and little known to | supporters of the Carlist cause, who I are still numerous in the Basque s Provinces. | It is thought in Carlist circles in | Paris that Don Jaime's death may | have a certain influence in healing the | breach between the late reigning | braneh of the Spanish Bourbons and ^ the legitimate braneh, ^
