CATTLE TICK
FINE FOR BREACH OF REGUL ATION S IMPOSED Alleging a breaeh of the Cattle Tick Regulations the Inspector of Stock, in the Rotorua Magistrate's Court yesterdaly, proceeded against W. Hilling, of Ngongotaha. The Inspector stated that the case was a serious one, as drovers and farmers generally should by now be fully apprised of the regulations. The defendant, . Hilling, had no excuse as he had crossed the Mangorewa-Ka-haroa Gorge with 10 head of cattle which he had purchased at Te Teko and had brought them to Ngongotaha without obtaining the necessary permit to bring cattle from the affected area which had its boundary at the Gorge. Hilling had previously brought cattle across the gorge and therefore could not plead ignoranee of the regulations. A permit cost nothing. Mr. E. Roe, who appeared for Hilling, said that he was instructed that the defendant was not av/are of the regulations in regard to permits. Previously, the cattle he had brought across the gorge belonged to his employer, who had made the necessary arrangements in obtaining the permits. In this case, however, the ten head of cattle were Hilling's own property, and he had brought the stock on his own behalf to Ngongotaha. A notice setting out the necessity of a permit was erected at the gorge, but it was now so dilapidated that it could not be read. He understood, however, that the Department was ereeting a fresh notice immediately. Hilling was fined £5 with 12/- costs.
