NEGLIGENT AND DANGEROUS MOTOR DRIVERS FINED YESTERDAY'S COURT A numher of traffie cases were dealt with by Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Rotorua Magistrate's Court yesterday. Two men, A. R. Townsend and A. R. Franks, who the Borough Traffie Inspector (Mr. D. M. Ford) stated raced in their cars on the Whaka Road at a speed of between 40 and 55 miles per hour, were eaeh fined £5 on charges of dangerous driving. Denis Lawford was fined £3 and costs for driving his car in a negligent manner in Hinemoa Street, The Inspector stated that Lawford drove up the street at a speed between 35 and 40 miles an hour and was travelling so fast that when he was endeavouring to turn into Fenton St. his car shot on to the footpath in front of the Grand hotel. Zig-Zagged in Gorge The Inspector stated that when he followed Francis McGlynn, who was driving at a speed of 40 miles per hour on the Hemo Gorge, the defendant zigzagged across the road for a , distance of over six miles before he could be stopped. On these facts McGlynn was charged with negligent driving and on a further count with failure to obtahrthe necessary driving license. Mr. E. Roe, who appeared for McGlynn, stated that defendant had driven a car for 20 years but this year had disposed of his car and had therefore not obtained a license. On the date of the offence he had purchased another car and had gone to the Borough Council offices to obtain a license. Unfortunately the Inspector had been absent on other duties and after waiting an hour McGlynn had set off without the license. On the way home, he had been seen by Mr. Ford, who had followed him.
McGlynn was fined £5 on a charge of negligent driving and 10/- for failure to procure a license. Negligent Driving Driving his car at a speed of 45 miles an hour over three intersections of the Whaka Road cost J. M. Nash £2 and 10/- costs on a charge of dangerous driving. As a result of a recent eollision on the Lake Road, Reginald Honan was charged with leaving a stationary vehicle without proper lights. SeniorSergeant Carroll, for the police, stated that defendant's lights had. failed as he was approaching Rotorua and he had parked his car on the side of the road and gone for assistance. He had not parked it sufficiently far over, however, and another car had crashed into it while he was away. Honan was fined 10/- with 10/- costs.
