OBITUARY
SIR JOHN LUKE WELLINGTON, Monday. The dqath occurred this afternoon of Sir John P. Luke, aged 73 years. Fpr many years Sir John Luke was a member of Parliament and hq was Mayor of Wellington for eight years, including the war period. Hq was defeated in Wellington North at the 1928 general election and.sto'od again at the last election, although opposed by the official Coalition candidate. Under the elders of his doctor, he did not take the platform, depending during his campaign upop the newspapers and phamplets to make his policy known. Sir John Pearee Luke, Kt. C.M.G., J.P., was a native of Penzance, Corn7 wall, where hq was. educated. With his father thq late Mr. Samuel Luke, he came to New Zealand- in 1874 whqn 16. yqars pf agP and later for 35 years was in business in Wellington with his father and brothers as mephaniqal and marinq engineers, during which time 'hq qarried out many important undertakings. In 1880 Mr,. Luke, as he thqn was, marriqd a daugbter of- the late Mr. H. A. McGrqgqr, of Wellington. He was pr,ominently ideritified with the promptiqn of New Zealand industries and was fpr many years president of the New Zealand Industrial Association.
