STOLEN GOODS

FOUND IN POSSESSION OF SYDNEY POLICE CONSTABLE. ROBBED SPORTS GOODS SHOP. A sensation y^as caused in police circles in Sydney last week when it was made known that stolen property had been found in the possession of a police constable in .the Eastern Suburbg. The headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Branch was a hive of ■ industry up to 3 a.m. I At one time 30 plainclothes and uniformed men were in attendance, . many having been hrouglit in from various city and suburban stations to assist the authorities in their interrogations. The property was alleged to have , been taken from the shop of Edgar j J. Rice, of Castlereagh Street, Syd- | ney, whose business premises were j robhed of lawn tennis racquets and i other articles. | The window had been broken with ] sorne instrument. The place was also robbed about five weeks ago. - Receiving inf ormation concerning articles in the possession of a police- j man, Detective-Superintendent Mackay had a consultation with Superintendent Irving, acting metropolitan superintendent, and action was decided upon. Late at night, Detective-Superin-tendent Mackay, who had called De-tective-Sergeant Lynch back from his holidays, went with him and others to a house where goods were obtained , in the possession of a young policeman. He, with another member of ' the force,, was -brought to the C .I.B., J and aecommodated for the night. ! The next morning, Det.-Superin-

tendent Mackay, Inspector Weir and the policemen and others met in the head official's room at the C.I.B. One of the policemen, after being questioned, was allowed to go home, but the other man was detained. The arrested constable is to he charged with having' broken and entered the shop of Edgar J. Rice and stolen goods between November 21 and ' 23.
