Water-Cart In Use As a result of the continued , dry weather motor traffic on the pumice roads is raising the dust to such an extent that the Borough water-cart was brought into nse for the first time this season on Saturday. This is earlier than last year. Contr'ast In Roads Motoring over the highways in tHe Tauranga County continues to be the penance it has been since motor-cars first came into use. Compared with the many fine roads in the Rotorua County, the contrast is most marked. Much of the Tauranga highway, particularly beyond Te Puke, is now under. construction, but progress is extremely slow and the surface.is a mass of large, loose stones where it is not broken by deep pot-holes and small wash-outs. Sunday School Anniversary A most successful Sunday School anniversary was celebrated by the Salvation Army yesterday. A special feature of the evening service was the company singing by the children's choir and the aceompaniment of con- ! gregational singing by the newlyformed brass band. To conclude the series of anniversary meetings a c.oncert will be held to-night in tbe Salvation Army hall. Instrumental and vocal items, together with Ihe singing company, band selections and dialogues will constitute a splendid programme. The annual prize-giving will also take place. Picnicking Ground. Fly fishermen on the Ohau Channel water are finding competition with the green beetle very difficult. Catches bf fish from all district waters at present indicate that the fish are feeding extensively on the beetle, and with the plentitude of natural feed of all descriptions which is jn evidence, artificial lures must be very sldlfully used to meet with any success. Fishing facilities at the channel have lately been increased by the opening of a very comfortable fishing lodge and tea-rooms by Mr. J. R. Cochrane who has acquired a provperty at the inlet to the channel. Mr Cochrane has in hand extensive improvements to the sandy beach along the lake shore and when these are completed, a splendid picnicking ground will he available for fishermen and visitors. Sunday School Anniversary. There were very large attendances, morning, afternoon, and evening, at services conducted yesterday in eonnection with the anniversary celebrations of St. John's Presbyterian Sunday School. A feature of the services was the inspiring singing of the schoiars, some 70 or 80 strong, under the baton of Mr. J. E. Buchan. The chureh had been charmingly decorated for the special occasion by the lady members of the Sunday School Staff. Morning and evening services for the children, were conducted by the Rev. A. C. Randerson, and in the afternoon, Mr. Edwin Robertson, an old hoy of the school, was the preacher. Solos were sung hy Misses Jean Worrall, Betty MeKeiizie, Moana McKenzie, and Dot Johnson. Misses Nancy Carroll and Grancton Le Grice contributed a duet and Misses D. Davies and Jean Worrall and Messrs J. Buehanan and C. D. Randerson, quartette numb'ers. »Gamc Postponed. The Winter Shield challenge game which o was to have taken place between Rotorua (holders) and Te Poi (challengers) over the week-end, was unavoidably postponed, After donating this bowling trophy for competition among district clubs the Rotorua Club reclaimed it from Tirau last week-end. Ohau Channel Inlet. The marked fall which has taken place in the level of Lake Rotorua this year has made the negotiation of the Ohau Channel from the Rotorua end a ticklish matter for launches of any draught. It has been suggested that a little dredging at the inlet would be of considerable assistance during the holiday season when the launch traffic through the channel becomes heavier. The majority of the launch owners operating on the two Iakes are well acquainted with the difficulties of the channel but even- a slight amount of dredging would make matters considerably easier for the different types of small craft which traffic between the two lakes. Few Applicants.
The Rotorua High School Board is advertising for a caretaker for the High School and it is understood that to date only three applications have been received.
