"JAY-WALKING" CAUSES GREAT NUMBER OF COLLISIONS While it is true that- New York city contends with motor vehicular traffie conditions which are paralleled in few cities in the world, the city in its vigorous efforts to reduce the number of aUtomobile accidents offers an object lesson to every community in the country. Jaywalking, or the crossing of streets at places other than crossings, is one of the commonest of all i causes of accidents, according to information- supplied by the police department of the city of New York. In a single month 18 deaths resulted and 471 were injured because pedestrians tried to cross streets while traffie lights were against them. Within a period of thirty days, 252 persons were injured in New York because of confusion over hand signals. Two hundred and sixty-two were injured because in attempting to pass cars they misjudged distances. New York's police study of accidents involving children show that jay-walking, playing games in roadway and running off sidew.alk into roadway, are the commonest causes of accidents. =
