DESPICABLE TRICK
MAN SENTENCED FOR MEAN FRAUD ON WELLINGTON WOMAN. WELLINGTON, Monday. The penalty for what his own coufisen said he realised was a "meah, despicable triek upon an unfortunate and credulous woman" was paid in the Supreme Court on Saturday by Thoirias Wallaee Dick, aged 39. Dick appeared for sentence on a charge of obtaining- £605 from Ivy Coral Ann Adkin by false pretences. He was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment. The circumstances briefly were that on the strength of certain representations made to her by the prisoner, iricluding an offer of marriage, Mrs. Adkin lent Dick sums of money totalling £605. Dick, in a statement to the police, admitted he had marricd another woman at Wellington in Ja~ nuary of this year, of which Mrs. Adkin was unaware until September. Counsel said that the only happy feature of the case was that the fidelity of the woman Dick had married towards the prisoner. "She has instructed rne to say," added counsel, "that after Dick has served the sentence of the Court he will make every endeavour to recognise the civil liability and. make restitution to the woman he has defrauded." Counsel suggested that a short term of imprisonment possibly would have the effect of repairing the damage that had been done. His Honour said he had not the slightest faith in the promise of which counsel had spoken, and his duty was to pass a substantial sentence on the prisoner.
