NGONGOTAHA VALLEY ROAD

MOTORIST.
(To the Editor). of the most beautiful scenic drivis ih the district is around the base of NgOflfOtaha Mountain. Unfortunately, owing to the deplorable state of the road, this drive is at present feat of heroism — bumping from rut to rut — with, during the whole journey, a risk of broken springs. At the present time the valley with steep sloping bush on one side and the vivid green pastures of farms on the other, is a pleasant sight. It first shows how heroically the small holders are working to become productive members of the community, and a practical demonstration of what can be done with our much maligned local country. Budding dairy farms predominate, but on the north, on the sunhy faces of the mountain the healthy sheep indicate the holdings of the sound pastoralist. In one sheltered corner an expanding fruit, vegetable and flower garden points the way to another form of successful production. Alas, the poor farmer and producer! The road is a disgrace and gives but poor encouragement to the settler who should see his efforts backed by reasonably good roads of communication. I trust that some of the authorities, who control the destinies of roads and highways, will take this drive and learn by personal, bitter experience, how greatly these hard working settlers have to suffer. — I am, etc.
