: IMPERATIVE NEED FOR RETURN OF COALITION GOVERNMENT . • STATEMENT BY MR. FORBES
HAMILTON, Tuesday. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon G. W. Forbes, paid a short visit tc Hamilton to-day while en route from Auckland to Rotorua via Arapuni. In a special interview Mr. Forbes said "I have now been from one end of New Zealand to the other and find a thing, which is very pleasing — the co-operation evident between the two parties irrespective of party. It shows they realise that this is no time for party differences. "The problem of this election is a national one. The policy of the Coalition Government is to maintain the finances of the country on a sound and stable basis. I have every confidence that the result of the election
will be similar to that which occurred in Britain where the serious aspect of the country's affairs was realised by the people so that they rosr and swept the Labour Government out of office. That Government was seriously damaging the financial reputation of Britain. "There is no question that the lowpriees New Zealand is getting for her produce, which v/as regrettably emphasised by the low opening at the wool saies, shows that only by the most prudent and economical management can this country overcome its difficulties. "While there has been certain organised opposition at my meetings I am quite satisfied it came from an irresponsible element. The thinking working man, r-ealises that it is as
much to his benefit as to any other section of the community that the affairs of the country should be placed in a solid position. The remedies proposed by what is miscalled the Labour Party, for Socialism is really its avowed aim, would only lead to disaster and that disaster would be felt by the workers more than anyone else. "The question that is before the electors to-day is a national one," concluded Mr. Forbes. "The Government is- seeking the approval of the people of the country in regard to its policy and I am confident of their. answer in support and that they will convey that confidence to the Government by the return of Coalition with a very ;lar,ge majority. The thing to be guarded against is the neglect of electors to register their votes. While it may ' be said that a former member is certain to win it is most essential that it be elearly stated what is the wish of the people in the various electorates."
