WHANGAREI, Monday. A fire at Russell, at five o'clock this morning, destroyed the well-known private hotel known as The Gables and the Dulte of Marlborough Hotel

adjoining. The beach was strewn with furniture saved by willing helpers. A bucket brigade saved Mr. G. F. Baker's residence next to the hotel. The police station was badly scorehed. It was a cairn morning, otherwise a whole block would have been demolished. The fire started in an nnoceupied upstairs room at The Gables, the owner of which is a heavy loser.
