RACING NOTES AND FORM PROSPECTS

'The Judge."

There should be some fine racing at the opening of the Takapuna fixture to-day, for the fields engaged are excellent all round. The going promises to be good. • The opening event, the Melrose Maiden, will be a scramble -over the five and a half furlongs. Tui Mint goes fast, and others that will be in the picture are Znight ,of Australia (who is going to develop into a fine performer), Silene, Royal Gallant, Bugle Call, Star Lap, Tatyoon, Amber Link, Daycoma, Click Clack and Lucidus. Much depends on the draw on, this., course,, and espeeially over this distance, but those that should be in the forefront are Tui Mint, Knight of Australia and Royal Gal- ; lant. I ■ . If. Bronze - Tray- is sent for the Tiri : High-Weight instead of the big event, he will be hard to beat. Lumin^ ary, Hit the Deck, Ruby Dawn, and; Heremia read best of the others, and there is the surprise element among the many others. Bronze Tray, Heremia and Luminary are fancied. A couple of three-year-olds . . in Royal Artist and Royal Ruler stand out in the Borough Handicap, although it is possible that the latter may start in,.the sprint. Chrysology, Vandyke and White Wings are others favoured, but the fancy is for the three-year-olds.

Alison Cup. ( Track ;f orm- is strongly represented by Catoma: in the Alison Cup, for this improved hack reeently put up a course record at Ellerslie over a round outside the trestles. Prince Val is a good horse, judged on his f orm at Ellerslie last month, and he heads better than anything else. Royal Doulton runs some of her best races at Takapuna, and Yolimond apparently has to be considered a f air stayer after. her, success in the ..Whangarei Cup. Sir Mond, Barascope and Brampr ton read the best of those lower down, but the issue appears to:lie between Prince Val, Catoma and Royal Doulton. There are not many in the Cam•bria, Handicap, , yet the class is even, although the topweight, Tea Trader, has. not shown his very best to date. j Thd danger to Tea Trader may come from Timorous, Prolyxo and Holly Lu. ^ ^ Takapuna Piate. . ■ A great lot of hacks will contest , the "classic," the Takapuna Plate, and it is thought that with Gray up and on the turning , course, Biddy's Boy might prove to be the good thing backers are certain to make him out i to be. However, he has some hot ones against him, notably Karangapai, United, Peter Jackson, Monarchy, Chief Jewel, Speedmint, Lord Val and others of lesser note. On this course, beginning ability counts most, and three regular speed merchants from the barrier are Biddy's Boy, Karangapai and United, and they will be very- conspicuous. Peter Jackson may be the best of the remainder. Hollyholm and Good Idea stand out in the Ponui Hack, and they ought to account for Valmarie and Moonfieet. ■ In the sprint, the Cheltenham Handicap, the Jamieson stable, ' with Refresher and Tea Chat, holds a strong hand, and the latter particulariy reads well. Lady Quex, Leitrim, Hlgh Comedy, Royal Ruler and King Ford are all very fast, but Tea Chat, Lady Quex and High Comedy will give their su--porters a fine run. At Feilding. The prospects are indeed bright for the opening to-day of the Feilding* spring meeting, and with big fields and class strongly represented, racegoers are- liberally. eaterea for. The recent rain in the district will ensure, good going with the sting out of .the ground. Moerangi ran a fine race on the flat at Feilding and in the opening event to-day, the Waituna Hurdles, he will be hard to beat. Manuiri and Easterly are promising., * Lady Pam has a good horse's weight in the Feilding Cup, but then she is a brilliant filly. Only reeently she made Bronze Eagle break the record over - this trip, sq she is very well. She will be coupled with the Levin winner, Spear Lad, so it is a strong combination. Perhaps the danger to the bracketed pair will be fortheoming from King Colossus, Arrow Lad and Richfield. Being unpenalised, Karapoti has a wonderful opportunity in the Feilding Stakes, even if the five furlongs may not prove quite far enough and his customary rider will be missing. Cadland is a fine sprinter too, and the most opposition to this pair may come from the two-year-olds, of whom Broken Rule and Inflation may be the pick. Karapoti, however, dominates the position. Joie de Val reads nicely placed after her splendid Levin win, but with a diff erent rider up Grand Jury may make amends, for he was shoekingly ridden last- week. They - meet on slightly djff erent terms in the Kowhai Hack, in ,favour of the latter, Jenny Diver and Fairway are two useful sorts furtfier down the list. Flying Handicap. Curie's light "weight should enable . him to do his best in the Flying Handicap, but he will be up against several speedy ones, such as Aston, Con- ; sent, Arisus, Tobaccoland, Equitant ,and Royal Routine. ' It Is not likely to be .a one horse race, but the pick of them may b§ Curie, Aston and | Equitant. | Leisure is not weighted out of the Fitzroy Hack, for she is a good sprin|ter and she has the same weight she ■won with last week. However, there ; are , several speedy ones below her, notably Glenartney, Derry Belle, Ara- ; jean, Childstudy, Arvada, All Humbug, Haulbowlie, Sabatini, and Lady . ; Court. The barrier positions will count I for something, and apart from this j the best may prove to be Childstudy, i Sabatini and Lady Court. i Nightmare and Royal Routine impress in the. , final event this after- ! noon, the Kiwitea Handicap, . and . they will carry the bulk of the investments. Moa Bird and Calamine should be the. best. of the remainder, but the Feilding seven furlong races are not easy to win.
