TYRE WEAR.

SHOCK ABSORBERS. — ^ Shock absorbers in their various forms are now fitted to nearly every new car sold, and it is probable that at least three out of four cars on the road are now equipped with them, While the contribution which a good Set of shock absorbers makes to the riding comfort of a car is undoubted, many drivers do not recognise that if they be incorrectly adjusted the rate of tyre wear will be substantially increased. The Dunlop-Perdriau Company points out that tyre life may be profoundly influenced by the efficiency of the shock absorbers. Others things being equrd, a tyre will give its utm'ost possible period of serviee only if it never leaves the road. Its action should always be a rolling one. If springs be ineffieient, or the shock absorbers incorrectly adjusted, rough tracks will • hrow the wheel out of contact with the road surfaee at intervals. When this occurs the speed of the tyre treai relative to that of the car changes. A back wheel, for instance, is considerably accelerated in the fraction of a second if it is allowed to run free in the air, while a front wheel will usually slow up. When this condition exists considerable friction and consequent ,wear of the tread, as well as stresses jn the tyre walls, occur when the wheel rebounds to the road and resumes its correct turning speed.
