MOTION DISCUSSED IN HOUSE OF LORDS. DATE OF OTTAWA CONFERENCE
— By Telegraph — Copyright.)
(Recd. No. 26, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Wednesday. In the House of Lords Lord Elibank moved his motion expressing the opinion that, in view iof the distress caused by the economic position throughout the Empire, the Imperial Economic Conference should be held at the earliest possible moment, and that Great Britain's first step towards entering Imperial agreements should be to grant the Dominions a comprehensive measure of preference. ■ This, he said, would achieve not only economic unity, but also the solution of all th problems dividing the Empire, Lord Strathcona, in reply, stated that the Government was making the utmost efforts to make the Ottawa Conference a success. Any earlier date than July would not suit all the Dominions. Mr. J. H. Thomas's consultation with the Dominions would greatly facilitate the • conference's task., Lord Elibank's motion was withdrawn. •
