Address to School Pupils As the result of a request made to schools by the Department of Internal Affairs in connection with fire prevention week, that instruction be given to pupils regarding the prevention of fire, the headmasters of the Rotorua public schools have taken advantage of the offer of Superintendeht T. Anderson of the Rotqrua Fire Brigade, to give the scholars a talk on the subject. Superintendent Anderson has already addressed the children at the Whaka Native School, and . at the Rotorua High School and this I afternoon will visit the Primary i School. Superintendent Anderson, in his talks, deals with the causes and prevention of firq, its heavy toll on property in New Zealand and also some methods of dealing with fires.'

Angler's Success An enthusiastic angler, Mr. James Gribble, of Auckland, is at present trying his luck in the district lakes. j Arriving here on Monday last, he spent Tuesday morning on Lake Tarawera, seeuring eight fish. In the afternoon he secured two in Lake Rotoma. Yesterday, with his son and Mr. Charles Gouch, of Auckland, Mr. i Gribble visited Lake Rerewhakaitu, | seeuring 32 fine trout, mostly in good J eondition. Mr. Gribble generally j spehds the Christmas and New Year holidays in the district, and is so far very pleased with his success so early in the season. He intends fishing the other lakes in the district during the next few days. Drought In Hawke's Bay The drought is affecting the FovI erty Bay district so severely that farmers are rushing their stock to the freezing works with the utmost speed. On Tuesday of this week the Gisborne Sheepfarmers Frozen Meaf Company established a recprd by putting through for the day the enormous total of 01QO lambs. Water rqstrictions have been plaeed qri the residents of Gisborne, and the use of the garden hose is prohibited. It is now five months since a serviceable rain fell and the possibility of the drought extending through the summer months is causing the gravest anxiety. Cottage Burned. " A small three roomed cottage ln a lonely localiifcy on the far shore of | Lake Rotoehu was totally destroyed ; by fire earlier in the week. The incident I was witnessed by only one bystander as the street was practically deserted at the time. Mr. Clinkard at Matamata. The Coalition candidate, Mr. C. H. Clinkard, M.B., addressed a very well attended meeting at Matarpata last evening when over 200 people were present. Offers of assistance in connection with Saturday's street collection for the local relief fund are still desired by the Local Unemployment Relief Fund Committee.
