AMATEUK. ATHLETIG CLUB'S FIRST EVENING MEETING GOOD FORM SHOWN The first of a series of evening sports meetings to be run under the ( auspices of the newly formed Rotorua j Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was held last Friday evening at the High School groiinds. Good entries were received for the events on the programme, ' and j close finishes in all the races kept the large number of spectators interested throughout. The High School competitors, as was anticipated, made their presence felt and were well represented in the finals, S. Mitchell in .particular running well and setting very good tiniGS. * * The first heat of the 100 yards handicap was won by H. Steele on nine yards in lOsec and, the second by S. Mitchell off the same mark in one second faster time. The last namedwon the final of the event by running a very fine race in 9 2-5 sec. With a good finish N. Hinton, the backmarker, won the 1 juile event in 3min 21sec. S. Mitchell was agaim to the fore. in the 150 yards handicap and off 15 yards won in 14-4-5sec. _ r Eleven entries were received for the long jump, N. G ainsford putting up a good performance by doing 18ft 4^ins, and with his handicap of 4 feet, winning at 22 feet 4!inches. The concluding event w.as a relay race between the High School and the Rest, S. Mitchell finishing well to
win for school. L Encouraging Prospects. § At the conclusion of the meeting | Mr G. H. Mason, president of the | club complimented the contestants on | their fine performances and urged | them to persevere in their training. | He assured them of the help of the = officials of the club in any direction | required. _ | Mr. Mason expressed the opinion | that, providing training was properly | attended to, Rotorua could produce | athlettes of outstanding merit. He | also expressed the hope that by the | time of the next meeting on Decem- I ber 4, the newly-formed ladies' branch : of the club would be far enough ad- \ vanced to enter for the races which j j would be provided. ; Results j Details of the results are as fol- | lows: — ! 100 Yards Handicap.
