HOLLYWOOD HAS TAKEN THE LAUGHTER FROM DIETRICH.
The first two or three days after ^ Marlene Dietrich's return from Cermany, she lunched at the Embassy ;
Club. Her laug- ; hter broke the stillness of the room into hright dancing : ; bits. Marlene threw her head back and laughed aloud. ) Few people do tliat in Hollywood.
She doesn't laugh like that any longer. Hollywood has done something to Dietrich. It has subdued her, taken the laughter from her lips, and in its place left a cynical smile. She admits she has no philosophy of life. "I think it is terrible. Life ! is so difficult. Even my so-called success brings me little happiness. When you are not known— when you are fighting for recognition, that is undoubtedly the happiest time. "If you make a good picture you are frightened about the next one — whether it will "be as good as the first. You have so much to worry. about." Her voice trailed off and j[ the divine Dietrich stared into space. Apathetie? Yes, our beloved Dietrich is apathetie. She is bored, irritated with the publicity she doesn't want. Her enthusiasms were torches which lighted ^ the blurhs in the press, her sincere = admiration for Garbo avalanched the | Garbo fetish; her passion for her I child was another eonflagration, and | so it goes. | Fame is a mocking mistress. I Marlene has great allure. Her | garters and sheer black hose have | started a new garter era in Holly- l wood. Look for them in Eddie Can- | tor's next picture- and see what I [ mean. | The next thing to puhlicise about ! this famous German lady? — ah, the j press will think up something. i Her husband is here now and she ! may fall in love with the inevitable I and start to laugh again. j
