BROWN BEETLE PEST

A species of small brown beetle is at present particularly plentiful in Rotorua and at night, hundreds of them are attracted by lights . The beetles are particularly destructive and have already considerably damaged a number of gardens. Some time ago, trout in a number of Taranaki streams wero found to be dying in hundreds, and on investigation it was found that they had been killed through eating large numbers of these beetles. The matter aroused some discussion and Jt was only after specimens of the beetles had been forwarded to Wellington that it was found, that the insects were poisonous to fish. It is to be hoped that the experience of Taranaki anglers is not repeated in Rotorua.
