CARE OF TYRES

® SOME CAUSES OF DECREASES IN MILEAGE AND WEAR. "Even in these enlightened dayis there are mahy Users of pneumatic tyres who irisUfflcieritly appreciate why some of their tyres give considerably greater mileage than others. And should orie of more outer covers fail earlier than expected, the reason is very often attributed to faulty manufacture, and the makers are discredited accordingly," states a tjrre expert. "So%far as the leading makes of peumatic tyres are eoncerned, methods of production are so standardised and supervised that variations in wearing qualities hetween covers and tubes of the same size and pattern are very much less than was the case when pneumaticfe were first applied. If therefore disappointing results are experienced, it will usually be fouhd that the conditions hnder which the tyres in question' are run, or their treatmerit, are responsible. In fact, it can be regarded almost as an axiom that every pneumatic tyre is capable of giving the maximUm mileage for which it was desigried; whether it attains it or not depends almost entirely upon the manner and circumstances of its use. "Here are some of the reasons for decrease in the mileage of yoUr tyres : Underinflation, wheels not in correct alignment, bent or rusty rims, brakes not properly adjusted, tyres not properly mounted, reckless driving, tread cuts not promptly mended. "Keep your eyes on these faults and rcmedy them promptly, and you will find that your tyres will give more than satisfactory consistent mileage." Underinflation. Now that balloon tyres have come into such wide use, the necessity of eonstant air pressure is important. When high pressure tyres were universally used, the escape of several pounds of air made but little differezice. Now if is a known fact that when the pressure in a balloon tyre drops more than three pounds, it begins to have a serious effect on the wear and general performance of the tyre. There is on an average a leakage of 10 per cent. of the air in a tube per week. The cost of a new tube is saved by prevent'ng uneven tread-wear or fabric breakes in the carcase of the casing due in underinflation. Wise car owners refuse to take chances on old tubes. They have found that one of the best ways to insure long, trouble-free mileage is to first buy good casings and then equip them with new, live rubber tubes that will hold air constantly, and give the casing the right kind of support.
