DEATH SENTENCE
PROCEDURE FOLLOWED. WELLINGTON, Monday. In view of the verdict of guilty returned by the jury in the Supreme Court, Wellington, on Wednesday at the trial of George Errol Coats for murder, the procedure adopted in such cases possibly is of some interest. Under the Crimes Act, where sentence of death is pronounced, it is the duty of the sheriff of the district to carry out the sentence, but not until he has received an intimation of the Governor-General will not interrespect thereto. Within seven days after the receipt of notification that the Govenor-General will not interfere with the sentence, it is provided that the sheriff shall carry the septence out. The prisoner hrs the right to move for a new trial on appropriate grounds and also the right of appeal to the Court of Appeal. In Coats' case, leave has been granted his counsel to move within five days for any leave to appeal or for any rnplication to reserve any question of law.
