"Over 50 per cent of our telephones in New Zealand to-day are of automatic operation," said Mr A. Gibhs, Ghief Telegraph Engineer, in an address at ihe Faraday celehrations at Victoria College, Wellington. "That is a world record," Mr Gibbs said. A 'disagreement between the Dudley (Wor ce&tersh'ire ) Corporation and Lord Ednam, regarding Dudley Gastle, has been carried a stage further hy the decision of the 'corporation to hand •the lease of the castle back to L-ord Ednam. The ruins were leased to the town a few years -ago hy Lord Dudley, Lord Ednam'-s father, for 99 years at a nominal rent of 10s per year. DifQculties arose over the legal interpretat'ion of some clauses of the lease. The popular belief that all oil wells are gushers was exploded in a recent address by Mr M. Macbeth, M.Sc., before the Wellington Post and Telegraph Engineers' llnstitute. The lecturer , stated that 90 per cent of the oil wells in the world had to be pumped. He duced only 1| per cent of the world's qil yield, while the United States supplied 63 per cent.
