SEVERE STORM
THUNDER AND LIGHTNING PRECEDE HEAVY RAIN FLOODING ON COUNTRY ROADS The sultry conditions which prevailed in Rotorua on Friday and Saturday, eulminated late on Saturday afternoon in a thunderstorm: of exceptional severity. Preceded by vivid lightning flashes, thunder rolled for the best part of an hour and was followed by a torrential downpour of rain which drenched the town and sports activities. All parts of the district had their share of the disturbance and evidence of the storm was to be found on all eountry roads where ditehes and creeks in many cases overfiowed the roads, leaving a trial of debris behind them as they subsided Towards the end of last week, - weather conditions all over the district \were most unusual. Motorists report that late on Thursday afternoon, there was a small cloud-burst on the plains beyond Rainbow Mountain, and 'that the Whirnaki Road on a clearly defined track about a mile in length showed signs of a torrential downpour of rain.
