f » BIG PUBLIC MEETING DECIDES TO PROMOTE SPORT IN ROTORUA 1FIRST MEETING NEXT FRIDAY ' A very enthusiastic and largely "attended meeting convened by Mr. E. "'G. Guy for the purpose of the formation of an amateur athletic and '.cycling club was held on Friday even*ing at -Brents Bathgate House. ? Mr. Guy, in stat:ng the objeets of "jthe meeting, addressed those present ;;at length on the aims of the proposed "club and stated that the large atten"dance testified to the interest in o ma- ^ teur athletics in Rotorua, which had •for some years been lying dormant. •■He stated that there was in oxistence at present, the Athletic and Axe--men's Club, which was a professional ■body, but that it was not the aim to "cbmpete against this club, but to pro- : v'de a sport for those interested in j athletics who wished to complete j iinder the amateur code. His idea in regard to the proposed j club was to hold a series of evening j ^ meetings, commencing almost immed- j ■jfately, in preparation for a speoial ] ineeting to be held during the coming | jphristmas holidays. j !* Prom'nent runners in Auckland had ] ; already prpmised to assist by contApeting in Rotorua and there were iindications that plenty of local talent " would be available. «» In seconding the motion, Mr. A. R. "?Ryder, stated that the facilities at •■-the High School were at the club's ■ydisposal and the High School staff ; -would do all possible to help the sport -'along. He was strongly in favour »»of amateur sport and was of the — opin'on that" the formation of the '-club would fulfil a long felt want in ' 1'the district*. He foresaw the time !l!when Rotorua would be the centre of /the sport for the Bay of Plenty. These remarks were supplemented '.".by Messrs. G. II. Mason, A. G. Cott!;rell and T. S. Robertson, and the "motion, px*oposing the formation. of "the club was carried unanimously and -the meeting proceeded to the business of the election of offiers, who are as follows: — President, Mr. G. II. Mason; VicePresidents, Messrs. D. Steele; A. G. Cottrell, and A. R. Ryder; Hon. Sec11 retary, Mr. C. J. Casey; Hon. Trea.1 surer, Mr. W. S. Henderson; Club Captain, Mr. E. G. It was resolved that, snbject to " the consent of the Auckland centre, the colours of the club be blue singlet with gold monogram (R).
