COUNCiL meeting GENERAL ROUTINE BUSINESS AND CORRESPONDENCE DEALT V/ITH COMMITTEES' REPORTS There were present at the regular meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council on Thursday evening, the Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson), Crs. L. J. Bayfeild, A. Smith, W. Galbraith, E. T. Johnson, O. II. Coleman, and G. Urquhart. Apologies for absenee were received from Crs. H. Tai Mitchell, N. M. Iveane, and W. H. Waclcrow. Mrs E. W. Wallis, Pukaki Street wrote stating that if the council would clear the frontage of her residence, she would be responsible for its upkeep. — The application was referred to the Works Committee. . j A letter was received from Mr. S. Pott inquiring if the council would ! consider the erection of a light at the intersection of Lytton and Tilsley j Streets. The poles were already in I oosition and a light would be a great I convenience to the residents who had j to go along Tilsley Street to Fenton ! Street. — The application was referr1 ed to the Works Committee. The secretary of the Retail Traders Association wrote advising that at the last meeting of the association it had been resolved that the secretary write and point out that the street lights were turned out at 4 a.m., when it is still quite darlc. — The Town Clerk stated that the association had been advised that this matter had now been reetified. Letters were also received from Mrs Louisa Stewart, Amohau Street, advising that she would be pleased to take advantage of the offer of the council to" dig over the grass margin n front of her property and top-dress same and from Mr. H. Campbell, Seddon Street, applying for a load' of ;op-dressing for the grass margin in front of his property. — Both letters vere referred to the VvT oks Commit;ee. • Mrs A. E. Speed Limit In Ohinemutu. The secretary, Komiti Marae, vhinemutu, wrote thanking the coundl for supplying a lawn mower, etc, -nd stating that tliese would be used .o the best advantage in improving she appearance of the public streets :nd court yards in the villages. The secretary also advised that at ;he last meeting of the village com"littee it was resolved to ask the

Fire Prevention The Minister of Internal Affairs advised that in an effort to reduce the present excessive fire waste in the Dominion, it had been decided to hold "i fi' e prevention weelc from the 23rd lO the 28th instant. (b) Give faciities for the clearing up of premises rnd the disposal of accumulations of ubbi-vh, even if the materials con•erned wex-e not ordinarily accepted for coFect'on. The Minister asked that the fullest publiclty should be given to the proposal and that Fire Boards should co-operate by having •pecial demonstrations by the brigide and opening the fire station to mblie Inspection every evening to ••how the public the working of the fire alavm apparatus. — The letter was efeired to the General Committee with power to act. Carnival Week and radio greeting cardsa wer-e also being issued and would be sent out by amateur transaritters to all places at which they established contact. With regard to the projected visit of the Mt. Eden Boys' Band, the committee recommended that as the amount required by the band in adiition to billeting would be approximately £35, the band be advised that aheir offer to visit Rotorua could not be accepted. The report was adopted. Taxi Owners Satisfied The General Committee reported bhat it had authorised the erection of

another telephone box in Arawa Street for the use of the taxi company operating there. The box was to be placed on the edge of the kerb near the tree in front of the Waiariki Maori Land Board's property. Each car on the stand was to pay a rental of £2 10 0 per annum for the respective boxes and the annual cost of the telephone was to be borne by the interested parties. All the taxi drivers on the stand had signified their acceptance to these conditions. The committee recommended that i ihe question of the removal of a street tree in front of Mr. L. Woollianr's property at the corner of Eruera and Tutanekai Streets be held over until the new building had been erected. It was also recommended that the tree in front of the premises of Messrs. McDowell and Co. be removed. With regard to the trees in McLean Street in reference to which complaints had been received from Mr. J. Oxenham, it was recommended that these trees be thinned out but that those nearest Wylie Street should not be interfered with. — The recommendations were adopted. The Works Committee recommended that the request of the Komiti Marae at Ohinemutu for the removal of the destructor from its present site be aceeded to, on condition that the owners of the land agreed to give to the council a satisfactory title on the new site, as well as access. It was recommended that the work be carried out as relief work under No. 5 Scheme. The total cost of removal and erection was estimated at £20. — The recommendation of the committee was adopted subject to the title being satisfactorily arranged.
