PREPARING FOR A HARD WINTER
POTATO CROP FOR RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYiP, . * " FAMlLIES Endorsement of the Mayor's actipn authorising preliminaTy arrpngemenis for the planting of an .area of -spi acres with potatoes for* tbe. relief, «qf the uriemployed during the cpqiihg winter was given by the^ Rotprpa Borough Council on Thursday evening. The Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson) said that it had been necessary to make preliminary affangements for the work in order not to miss'the planting season. The ar.ea seleeted was particularly suitable for a potato crop and he thought should give a crop of at least six torts to the acre. It was simply a matter of- the Council finding the cost of the materials'and reimbursing itself out of tbe "%lappe of the crop." He thought it was quite a sound proposition, as the majority of the labour could b'e carried out by relief wdrk and there were good* prospects of obtaining a good' crop. II Was really only in the nature of a loan. Cr. A. Smith asked what the cost falling upon the borough would be and whether the Council wenld have to earry the whole of the amount. The Mayor said tbat the amount required Would be approximately £65 but he understood the Couhtly Council was prepared to make- a donation of £5. General ap(proval of the scheme was expressed by cbuncillors and the Mayor's action ih making preliminary arrangements.was endorsed.
