FRUITLESS EFFORTS TO SAVE YOUNG COMPANION FROM DROWNING

— By Telegraph — Copyright.)

NEW PLYMOUTII, Thursday. The heroic attempt of twin brothers, Arthur and Laurie Lehndorft, aged 14 years, to rescue a companion from drowning was related at the inquest on Alfred Stanley Hansen, aged 9 years, who was drowned in the surf at the mouth of the Waitara River. The tide was out and Hansen stepped into a deep hole, scoured out by the recent flood. His two companions rushed to his assistance and struggled with him for some time. They had almost taken him to safety when the swiftly changing currents eaught them and swept Hansen out to sea. The boys searched in vain for him. The body was washed up two hours later. Arthur Lehndorft is the champion swimmer of his school and the winner of the Herbert Smith Trust Cup.
