More Difficulties.

The construction of the Borough pumping station in King Street has been interrupted by a succession of unusual obstcles, and even now that the actual station itself is completed, the worrie's of the contractors and the Borough engineer are by no means over. Following the completion of the concrete work in the tank, the workmen commeneed the construction of j 250 feet of feeder main to link up I the station with the retieulation, but J after a trench had been sunk to a depth of 12 ft. in preparation for the | laying of the pipes, water from the j underground streams which caused ; so much trouhle in flooding the tank [ site, broke through again into the i trench. In order to run off the water, two pumps were installed, but a new i development has now occurred. It been found that the pumps are scouring sand from a sand layer which lies at a depth of from 12 to 14 feet below the surface, and as a result, the whole of the ground level around the trench has subsided by a foot or 18 inches. So far, 60 to 70 feet of pipes has been laid and approximately 190 feet still remains to be linked up under these most diffieult conditions.
