HOSPITAL RATES

SYSTEM OF COLLECTION FROM MAORIS IN WAIROA DISTRICT ROTORUA C.C. DISCUSSION Following recent enquiries in regard to systems of levying for native hospital rates, the Rotorua County Council yesterday received a letter from the Wairoa Hospital Board outlining the method adopted on that board's district for the collection of hospital rates from Maoris. The Wairoa Board stated that some time ago, on the initiative of a native member of the board a hospital association had been formed among the natives. Each member of the association made a yearly contribution of £1 which entitled him or her to hospital treatment. The amount collected by these contributions was paid to the hospital board and it had j been found that double the amount secured by the previous system of rating, had been secured in this way. It was decided to refer the letter to the Waikato. Hospital Board, the hospital rating authority for the Rotorua district, for consideration.
