JOCKEY METCALFE'S CONDITION

CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. The condition of T. Metcalfe, the jockey who was badly hurt when his mount Countermarch fell at the finish of the Linwood Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday was slightly improved to-day, but is still serious. When Countermarch fell Peter Jackson, ridden by H. Stockley, came down over him and Sharpthorn also lost his rider, T. Tilton. Metcalfe fell heavily and was struck by the feet of the galloping horses. He is suifering from grave head injuries, the worst being a fracture at the base of the skull.
