CHINESE RETREAT ARRIVAL OF JAPANESE REINFORCEMENTS TURNS SCALE AERIAL TACTICS DECISIVE

Rec. Nov. 7, 5.5 p.m. SHANGHAI, Friday. The arrival of Japanese reinforcements decided the issue of the Nonni River battle, according to Mukden despatches received to-day. A mixed brigade commanded by Major-General Hasebe and employing bombing planes turned the tide in favour of the Japanese, although the latter admit heavy casualties. The Japanese headquarters declares that the Chinese are in f ull retreat. The Chinese forces, despite their superiority in numbers, and although equipped with modern weapons of Warfare, were unable to withstand the Japanese aerial tactics and retreated in comparative disorder, leavthe Japanese in full possession of the river area and enabling the railway bridge repair gang to resume work.. The Japanese admit losing 130 men. Estimates of the Chinese casualties have not been received, but they are believed to have been considerably heavier. As a result of the Nonni River battle the Japanese are reported to be transferring the Changchung garrison forces to Nonni.
