THE TROTTING CUP

Even in centres where trotting is not a popular sport there is always interest taken in the New Zealand Trotting Cup, more particularly since it has been run in two heats and. a final. The qualifying contests eventuate on Tuesday and the final on Thursday, when the Derby is also run. Great interest is being manif ested in Harold Logan, who has been registering some phenomenal performances with regularity, his last run over a mile and a quarter in winning at Oamaru being a revelation of pacing speed. Harold Logan is going to be the favourite in both his heat and the final next week, and if he runs up to form he is going to take some beating. One of his most dangerous opponents will be last year's victor, Wrackler, whose run at Wellington last week indicated that while he has not had the racing that Harold Logan has undergone of late he must be | pretty forward. The Trotting Cup is ; a stiff test, for it is nothing more or less than a two-mile sprint, for the pace usually set makes it a sprint all the way. Nothing outside this pair could be greatly faneied, Glenrossie, Kingcraft, Carmel, Logan Park and Peter Bingen being perhaps the best. Divisions UnequalIt is invariably the case in division races that one division usually works out much weaker than the other, and so it is for the two races next Tuesday, but as they are separate races it will not affect backers. In the first heat, which is the weakest, Logan Park, Peter Bingen and Harold Thorpe may be the best. Harold Logan and Wrackler will monopolise the market in the second heat, with Carmel considered as the next best. The final on Thursday will be contested by a field of eight, the first four horses in each heat qualifying. Wrackler and Harold Logan promise to fight out the final, although the heat contests may provide something to make a race of it with the two cracks. The third fancy may be Peter Bingen, for his race in the heat should make him a greatly improved horse.
