ROTARY CLUR
WEEKLY MEETING N-Z. DISTRICT GOVERNOR ADDRESSES ROTORUA L ROTARIANS. INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION. Rotorua Rotarians, at their weekly meeing yesterday, listened to an interesting address from their Distriet Governor, Rotarian Harry Guthrie, of Dunedin, who is at present on his official tour of inspeetion of clubs throughout New Zealand. The Distriet Governor has recently returned from the last annual convention of Rotary International, held in Vienna, and prefaced his general address upon j;he ideals and aims of the movement by a brief resume of his trip to the convention. Leaving Auckland, Rotarian Guthrie stated, he had been weleomed at Honolulu by the club there, and later again at Vancouver, where he had been present at a luncheon before proceeding through td Chicago. Chicago Club. He arrived in that eity on the club's meeting day, and found at the meeting no less than 294 visiting Rotarians, who were weleomed. They had had a wonderful trip across the Atlantic by the liner George Washington, which carried no f ewer 'than 420 Rotarians as passangers.' They had Rotary meetings every day and had seven International presidents among those on board. They had landed at Cherbourg and after a day and a half in Paris, had proeeeded through by night train to Basle. From Basle, they went to Zurich, and at each of these places had wonderful receptions from the members of the movement. Governors' School.
After leaving Zurich, they propeeded to Innsbruck, and from there to a health resort, 4000ft up in the Austrian Alps, where the Governors' instruetion school was being held. It was a wonderful proof of the international spirit of Rotary that no fewer than 71 of the 74 Distriet Governors scattered throughout the world were present at the school. "You can see from that that Rotary is no flash in the pan. Rotary is here and men are thinking a great deal about it and doing a great deal for it," said the Distriet Governor. There had been a splendid spirit throughout the convention and he considered that British Rotarians should be proud of the fact that one of their own men, Rotarian Sydney Pascal, had been unanimously elected to the presidency of Rotary International. His Majesty the. King had sent Rotarian Pascal a cablegram of congratulation upon the honour eonferred upon him. Ideals of Rotary. Distriet Governor Guthrie then proeeeded to deal with the general aspects and ideals of the movement, stressing the importanee of individual co-operation in working for the Rotarian ideal of "Serviee above Self." Rotary was a great force and looking baek upon the first quarter century of its development, they could see that a great deal of progress had_bcen made in its developmentIts great value was that it brought together men of differing vie.ws and business interests, to discuss their problems in common and' work together in the ideal of serviee. It encouraged friendship and worked fo'r international peace and a higher standard of business ethics. The outside public judged the movement upon the lives of its members and it therefore behoved every Rotarian to earry out so 'far as he was able, the ideals and aims which each individual member shared all over the world. At the conelusion of the address a very hearty vote of thanks was carried by acclamation on the motion of the club president, Rotarian J. H. Buddle. An assembly meeting of the club was held last night, at which the Distriet Governor met the chairmen of committees and examined the infcernal workings of the organisation.
