Horses Scarce Motorists . p,r© constantly . complain7 ing to the "Post" that there are too many horses in this district — especially- over some of the highways. The other.. side of the pictur^ was presented hy a settler yesterday when he eomplained to a representative . of the "Post" that he had been unable to purchase a worldng horse, though he had tried all round the district. Of course there. are horses and horses, and those which annoy the motorist would hardly meet the settlers' need. Card Tournament The Druids' Lodge held another of its popular series of fortnightly 50Q tournaments on Wednesdav evenin^ When approximately 5.0 players were at the tables. The first prize in the ladies' section was won by Mrs. Neal and the first prize for the men, by another lady, Mrs. ,A. E. Thompson, who was playing in the meh's section. Long Trips by Air The Rotorua Airways, Ltd., have received several commissions for lengthy trips lately and are booked for another one in about 10 days time. The Puss Moth, fiown hy Captain Hewitt, will pick up a passenger in Auckland and take him to Motiti Island in the Bay of Plenty, then to Te.Teko and back to Auckland. Arrangements are also being made for another long trip, but final details are not yet available. Fishing at Rerewhakaitu Fishing in Lake Rerewhakaitu on Sunday and Monday last, Messrs. A. Belcher and Clarlc, of Auckland, and Tassells, of Tauranga, • seeured 61 trout. On Monday the weather was rather rough, but ihe opening day of the season, Sunday, was ideal. All the fish were taken on the spoon. Fishing Catches A_f air number of anglers have been out since the opening of the trout fishing season on Sunday, and some fair bags have been taken. Fishing in the Ohau Channel yesterday morning, Dr. Marshall, of Auckland, took a limit bag while on Okareka, Mr. S. L. Paterson, took 10 nice fish. A Hastings trolling party off the Dogger bank at Kawaha Point, also reached double figures, their catch including two very nice fish over 5lbs. and in excellent condition. Guy Fawkes Night The usual flare of bonfires with their staccato fireworks accompanied dotted the different streets of the town last evening as the young folk incinerated effigies of the late Guy Fawkes with all their usual enthusiasm. The deeper sound of the larger fireworks was absent, however, owing to the new restrictions on their sale, but this did not prevent the fifth of November celebrants from making the most of their lighter artillery. Kowhais in Bloom The kowhai trees on the route between Taupo and Tokaanu are reported to be in full flower at present and with their masses of dork gold bloom are a most beautiful sight. This route is one of the most delightful drives in the North island and at present it is at its best. Roys' Bugle Band. An organisation worthy of encouragement at the Rotorua High School is the boys' bugle band. At yesterday's sports meeting the band gave promise of developing into an excellent musical combination and it was evident that the training which the boys are receiving will he of considerable assistance to them in carrying on with musical activities after they leave school. High School Grounds. Excellent work has been carried out in improving the playing grounds at the Rotorua High School. . The school has now been in, existence for four years and in that comparatively brief space of time a first-class turf has been developed on the playing area and the general surroundings have been very attractively laid out. The grounds were at their best for the annual sports meeting held yesterday. Stickers For Carnival. With a view to advertising the approaching New Year carnival the Rotorua Borough Council has had, printed a large number of very attraetive stickers which can he attached to correspondence. The stickers may be obtained free of eharge by any business people and are to hqf had at the Borough Council offices. A red and green design has been used to set out the date and place of the carnival. Shark Washed Up. From time to time large fish are washed up on the beach on the coast in the vicinity of Wanganui. Recently a rare whale was washed up at Waverley, causing much interest. On Friday morning a 10ft shark appeared on the north side of the moles at the mouth of the Wanganui River. A new selection of books from Nelson's Edinburgh Library has just arrived.
