HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

MEMORABLE DAY NEW RECORDS ESTABLISHED ANDOLDONES BROKEN BOYS' ATHLETIC CONTESTS Freed from the confining y^alls of the class-rpom, and wifb entfiusiasm running high y/ith the joy of stimplating athletic" rivalry, hundreds of enthusiastic boys made the annual sports pf the Rotorua High School yesterday a memorable event in tfie history of the institutiop. The girls, although their main events had been decided earlier in the week were not a whit behind the boys in cheerihg on the contestants to wjn fionours for the houses whose colours they flaunted. The organisation was well-nigh perfect and refleeted great credit on the organising ability of the head(master, Mr. A. R. Ryder, and his assistant masters, who have spent much time and trouble in coaching- and instructing the boys. They had the assistance also of several parents and - enthusiasts who acted as judges, timekeepers, etc. Hundreds of parents, friends of the school and old pupiis rolled iip to lend encouragement to the . competitors and at times the house barracking became really frenzied. A scoring fioard kept the spectators well informed of the compar a- , tive merits of the Houses, while the brilliant House flags of both girls and boys lent a dash of gay colouring to the seene. Afternoon tpa, organised by Miss J. Wilson and her willing fielpers was served in the school hall and the thanjks of all are due to Miss Grape Cameron-Johnson and Miss Margaret McKenzie who, by providing a delightful musical entertainment "of piano and violin duetsj helped towards the success' of the afternoon. At the conclusion of the sports' programme, the entire school, still in running uniform paraded by Houses, the winning Houses leading. Their march around the oval, House captains flying their flags to a march played fiy the school band formed a fitting climax to one of the school's great annual fixtures. 8ome very good finishes were recorded, three records being set up, while thp inter-house tug-of-war and the decorative chariot race by the girls proved two of the most exciting events of thp day. J. Christophers is to be congratulated upon his performance in the high jump. He cleared five feet, breaking last year's record of 4ft llh ins. A. Hurrell by completing the mile in 5min 7 4-5sec, and K. Matthews by doing the 220 yards sprint in 25 2-5see, both broke- and established 1'ecords. Much amusement was caused in the "Fathers" race when, as the competitors were nearing the finish, the judges decamped with the tape, much to the consternation of the runners. By an extra effort, hpwever, Mr. J. Alexander managed to reach the worsted first, closely followed by Mr E. Mason. The rest of the field was well spread out in varying stages of exhaustion. Held in conjunction with the boys' sports were some of the girls events the results of which follow: — 220 Yards Senior Handicap, Final: W. Steele 1, G. Le Grice 2, M.
