The final count of the polling in over 300 municipalities in England and Wales and 17 London boroughs, thus far shows heavy Labour set-backs including the loss of control of Woolwich, Shoreditch and Battersea, where the Labour majority of 12 was converted into a minority of 8. Southwark has seven instead of 18; nd Fulham one instead of eight. Laour is also losing steadily in the ountry. It lost 10 seats at Derby and ontrol of the council; 11 and conrol at Stoke-on-Trent; five at Preson; four at Reading; 12 and conrol at Birkenhead; nine at Liverpool, ,nd nine at Manchester. All 24 Socalists at Birmingham were defeated. After 80 results had been known ihe gains and losses were as follows: Gains Losses Conservatives 149 5 Liberals 26 5 Labour 5 205 Independents 46 10 The Conservatives gained seven ind the Liberals three of the Labour osses at Derby, where a woman nomnee of the unemployed received only !4 votes.
