MERRITT'S INTENTIONS
(Press Assn.-
NO DESIRE TO FOLLOW IN FOOTSTEPS OF DACRE TENTATIVE AGREEMENT ONLY
-By Telegraph— Copyright.)
AUCKLAND, last night. A false impression was created in the cable news some weeks ago b.y a message which stated that E. Merritt, a member of the New Zealand Cricket team, was returning to England to play for a Lancashire league club. It is quite true that Merritt entered into a tentative agreement with he' Rishton Club, Lancashire, to play for that club next season for a period of 20 weeks, but this agreement was subject to ratification by the New Zealand Cricket Council. Merritt's object in returning to England during the New Zealand winter months is as much a business one as for playing purposes. He had no idea of following in the footsteps of Dacre by qualifying to play for an English *-.o anty. On the contrary, Merritt's desire is to conciuue playing the game in New Zealand as long as he can play. The position in regard to his agreement, therefore, is thac he will iiaveto place all the facts beftre the New Council, which body will give its sanction or otherwise.
