TWO AMERICAN STATES ARE UNABLE TO PAY WAGES CHEQUES CANNOT BE CASHED

-By Telegraph — Copyright.)

Rec. Oct. 31, 5.5 p.m. NEW YORK, Friday. Despatches from Nashville indicate that the States of Tennessee and Alabama are seriously embanassed financially. October salaries have not been paid by the Government to the judges of the Supreme Court of Tennessee. No salaries have been paid to teachers in the six normal schools for six months, and many country schools are closed. State obligations totalling £200,000 are unpaid as the treasury has no funds. The Alabama treasury to-day sent out cheques for 285,000 dollars to pay State employees, but added a warning that these were not to be cashed as there are no funds. Bank failures in which State funds are invested and the depression are responsible for the conditions in, both States.
