EEL NEAR ROTOEHU

A probable explanation of the recent appearanee of a large eel in a stream flowing into Lalce Rotoehu, ?near Hongi's Track, as recently reported in the "Post," has been forwarded to an Auckland paper by a Whakatane correspondent. The eel was 10.11b. in weight and the oldest Maoris residing in the vicinity deelared that nq eel previous-1 ly had been captured in Rotoehu or any of the streams flowing into it. The correspondent wrote as follows: — "I placed a 6in. eel into Rotoehu near Hongi's Track in November, 1928, with the intention of noting how quickly an eel would grow. I was sure some of the Maoris one day would capture the eel and give its weight. Sixteen months after I liberated the eel I saw a good-sized one at the same spot.".
