COUNCIL MATTERS

(To the Editor) Sir, — I would like to have the opportunity to reply to a few of Mr. Galbraith's remarks, and actions in reference to Council matters. In the first place I think that his action in resigning from the council and then seeking re-election was uncalled for. The action of Councilor Smith and myself in resigning from the Works Committee was quite sufficient to show that we did not approve of the way work was being carried on in connection with the planting of trees etc. at Whaka. But we had to realize that if the majority of the Councilors did not agree with our views, then the next best thing was to do our best to convince them to our way of thinking, and no good purpose could be served in acting as Mr. Galbraith aeted. In reference to his inferring that I the reason I withdrew my resignation from the Works Com'mittee, was that I I was anxious to get the chairmanship j of that committee, all I can say is that i I had no ambition for this position j as I know that to fill the position as j it should be filled will entail a great lot of extra work. However, while I remain a member of the Council, I am there to do my fair share of work, at the direction of the Council as a whole. I consider that if Mr. Galbraith had done his full duty as chairman, he should at least have known how much money should have been credited from the other Funds because in going into the question, we find that now approximately £130 should have been credited to the Works Committee. I am afraid that Mr. Galbraith's reason for resigning from the Council was not altogether owing to the Works Committee question. In other words, I think it was more a personal matter than otherwiseHoping I have not taken up too much space in this connection, as I do not believe in writing to the Press in these matters; only I felt that some plain talking was necessary in this case. I am etcvery closely during the week-end, it E. T. Johnson, Rotorpa, 28/10/31.
