! STATEMENT REGARDING MEN DISPLACED FROM RAILWAYS

WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Details of the arrangements made for the employment of those men who were displaced by the cessation of work on the Napier-Gisborne, South Island Main Trunk and WestportInangahua railway lines are announc- ; ed by the Minister of Public Works, : the Rt. Hon- J. G. Coates. I In all, 1501 men are- concerned. | They will be placed on roading works I throughout the country, and accommodation will be provided for them. It has been decided that they will be classified as relief worlcers, although contracts may he let. * Housing has been arranged for the wives of the married men in the hutments already in use at the railway works. Mr- Coates said he was pleased to say now that it had been found possible to make arrangements to absorb all the men in other employment. The numbers employed on the lines mentioned, at the date of stoppage, were: Napier-Wailcolcopu, 445; South Island Main Trunk, 694; WestportInangahua, 362.
