'ROTECTIONISTS WIN MANCHESTER ii NATIONAL CABINET SAFE BUT LABOUR LEADER BEFEATED First returns from, tlie constituencies suggest that the National Government in Great Britain has seored an even more sweeping victory than was anticipated. Throughout the country there has apparently been a landslide away from Labour and Free Trade, the National candidates, particularly the Conservatives, fiave scored heavily, the vote in many of the eontituencies showing a complete reversal compared with the figures for the 1929 elections. In Free Trade Manchester all ten seats have been captured by Protectionists and in the industrial North the Con- j servatives have captured many of the traditional Labour strongholds. —
