PUBLIC OPINION

G. C.

NAUMANN,

The Post" at all times welcomes correspondence from its readers. It mftst, however, he clearly understood that we accept no responsibility for « , the views expressed by our correspondents. To the Editor. , Sir, — In his reply to the Ratepay ers' letter as published in your issuc of 21st inst., the Mayor practicallj admits that our statement as to the Mount- Albert Town Clei'k's salary is correct, hence it is pertinent to as! why he did not do so in the first place instead of accusing us of making ari incorrect statement as to that salary, which he attempted to prove by quoting the salary of a town clerk whose engagement terminates next March and who. has apparehtly been granted l.eave of absence on full pay at a salary fixed during prqsperous times, a matter which has no connection with the salary now being paid to the present actihg town clerk beyond show- | inS" that a reduction in salaries took place. It is significant that the Mayor, in quoting the salary of the absent town clerk, uses the present tense, whereas he quotes the asistant's salary in the past tense. Summed up,- the -Mayor's statement amounts to this: "The combined salaries of the absent town clerk and his former assistant amounted to £1000 per annum, while now the salaries for the two offices have been I redneed. to £600 per annum." All of which plainly indicates that the Mount Albert Council, like those of most municipalities, has reduced the salaries of its staff in accordance with the tiines, which is one more reason why Rotorua should do likewise. On our part, correspondence relating to this subject will now cease. Yours, etc.. . .

Hon. bec., Ratepayers' Assn.
