It is understood that a considerable stake is dependant on the result of the match, although the contestants, being amateurs, are desirous of taking out the stake in the form of a trophy or trophies. It is certain- as yet as to just what form these will take. Formal challenges have been issued and the following. which is reproduced from a Hawke's Bay paper, signifies the acceptance. "We, the undersigned hereby accept the challenge issued by G. A. Graham and J. P. Sheehan, to a golf match to be played at Taupo on 31st inst. subject to the following rules and conditions. The match to be played over 36 holes under the rules of Golf (excepting rule 4) of the Royal and Ancient Club of St. Andrews and the rules for best ball and fourball matches with the addition of rule 2 (1) and (2) prescribed for the conduct of stroke competitions substituting Umpire for Committee therein. In order to retain our amateur status the losers are to provide trophies to the value of stake first mentioned in the challenge. (Signed) J. A. DONNE A. N. MATHIESON.
