GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
HAPPY GATHJERING CELEBRATES CONCLUSION OF TOURNEY A very pleasant function took place at the conclusion of the New Zealand Ladies' Golf Championship last Friday, when dozens of enthusiastic golfers and spectators clusterea around whilst Miss Snodgrass, club captain of the Rotorua Club, in a neat speech, oifered the club's congratulations to the winner and run-ner-up of the championship. These sentiments were heartily seconded by all present as the two finalists, by their sporting play right through the championship, had made thmselves very popular, and if such a thing were possible in golf, . local enthusiasts would, who have wished for nothing better than that the two players could have shared the championship between them. Miss Snodgrass also thanked*the Union delegates for having given Rotorua the chance of holding the championship. Rotorua is the smallest centre to have ever been accorded this honour and the strenuous efforts of the committee were recompensed to a great extent by the many laudatory comments made during the toiirney by visiting golfers anent the arrangements and the tournament generally. Mrs. La Trobe Hill as secretary in particular, has had a very trying and a very strenuous time indeed and the thanks which Miss E. Bell returned to her on behalf of the Union were sincere and well merited. It was a very nice gesture on the part of the Union to present Mrs. Hill with a memento of the occasion. A tinge of regret coloured the proceedings when the time came for Mrs. Troutbeck to make a presentation to Miss M. Payton on the occasion of her relinquishing the secretaryship of the Union, due to her leaving Rotorua for Hawaii. Miss Payton has been an asset to Rotorua sport for many years and her business-like methods in conducting the secretaryship of the Ladies' Golf Union have done much to place the organisation in the happy position it occupies to-day. Rotorua's loss will be Hawaii's gain and members will wish Miss Payton every success in her new field of activity. The finish of the tournament closes an epic chapter in Rotorua's golf history and all who worked so hard for its success will be able to look back with pleasure on something attempted and something done and done right well. It will be many years before Rotorua will get the tournament again, but the one concluded will leave many happy recollections in the minds of members and contestants alike. A danee and social will be held at the Club house on Saturday, October 24, at 8 p.m. Members may invite one friend. Tickets 3/-. Visiting golfers are also invited.
