MAJESTIC

TO-NIGHT If you like a corking good detective yarn — and who doesn't — -then see "Charlie Chan Garries On," which opens to-night at the Majestic Theatre. This Fox offering is remarkable in more Ways than one. It brings the redoubtable Warner Oland to the screen iri a sympathetic role as the sleepy-looking but brilliantly epigrammatic Oriental detective. It sticks to Earle Derr Biggers' flne novel. And its splendid cast is flawlessly directed. The film is one of those rarities w^iich is a delight to review. It is swift, intriguing, vivid and alwayS ent£rtaining, with a charming romance' rurinning through the story. ■ Opening- in Londori with th© inexpl'cable murder of an- elderly millionair©, the backgrounds shift on -always east ward to France, Italy, Egypt, China and Hawaii, with two- additional killings and an attempted' f ourth one, before Ghgrlie Chan steps in to give his aid in the situation. While Oland holds most of the aeting honours, the entire cast is a notable one. Outstanding are Marguerite Churchill, John Garrick, Warren Hymer, Marjorie tVhite, William Holden, John T. Murray and Peter Gawthorne, while Hamilton Mac-Fadden's-direction calls for' considerable praise. 1 Put "Charlie Chan Carries On" on the list of films you simply must see.
