WHAKA DRAINAGE

"We can't do anything further about it except to make £100 go as far as £400," said the Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson) at last night's meeting of of the Rotorua Borough Council when a letter was received from the Minister of Native Affairs (the Hon. Sir A. Ngata) advising that in view of the present financial position, his Department could not consider any increase in the subsidy towards the proposed drainage scheme at Whakarewarewa village. The council re-. cently protested to the Minister in regard to the action of the Department in requesting £300 from the Arawa Trust Board as one third of the amount of £900 promised towards the scheme.
