LOCAL AND GENERAL

Unusual Thermal Heat When boring operations were in progress about a week ago, to test for foundations for a new bridge near the 21-mile peg on the Taupo Road, the worlcmen found some rather unusual thermal activity. The ground beneath the surface was so hot that the wrought iron rods of the boring pla,nt were bent by the heat. The surface ground at the edge of •the stream, only a few feet from the road, is intensely hot and even the shallow edges of the stream itself are quite warm. Te Whaiti Sports Club A general meeting was held at Te Whaiti recently of the sportsmen of the district when it was decided to form a Te Whaiti Athletic and Axemen's Club. Mr. H. The new structure will be 20 feet in width and will have a span of 35 feet. Unemployed in Borough About 89 married unemployed men cornmenced worlc for the borough council yesterday morning — a slight increase on the number employed during the previous week. The Government grant for relief work is still being reduced and this is necessitating the numbers of hours worked being cut down. Nearly fifty single men are registered but there are no funds available to give them employment and there is, as yet, no alternative scheme whereby these men may earn a livelihood. Working Under .Difficulties j The staff of the Rotorua telephone j exchange is at present working under j difficulities, during the erection of the j new branching multiple telephone switchboard. Engineers are working in the exchange room and workmen are erecting scaffolding outside the window, both jobs causing a certain amount of unavoidable noise which makes the effective work of the exchange staffs difficult. The phone connections are now operating through the new frame in an adjoining j room and when the switchboard is j installed, which will be within the I next few days, the gradual change j over from the old board to the new will he cornmenced. Saturday's Golf Results. j As the golfing season is drawing to a close fewer contestants are taking part in the weekly competitions organised by the Rotorua Golf Club on the Arikikapakapa course. The two best seores returned in the four-ball bogey competition played on Saturday were those of Potts and Marsh, 7 up and S. E. Carr and Branson, 3 up. Bowling Competitions , The Rotorua Bowling Club will begin its season's competitions to-mor-row when the Wednesday club fours will commence in the Government Grounds green. The Saturday club fours will also commence at the weekend, and the two series will be advanced regularly until the section winners are determined. Fond Fishermen Although the trout in the ponds of the Government Gardens are supposed to be like gold-fish, free. from the anxieties of a fisherman haunted life, there are always some optimistic individuals who tempt them with a hook and line when the eye of authority is temporarily turned the other way. Last week one of the trout which was trailing a hook and a long length of broken line was removed from the pool and freed of this relic of an unsuccessful attempt to disturb this piscatorial arcady where fish are kept to be seen and not caught. Hockey Officials' Appreciation At the conclusion of this season's final meeting of the Rotorua Ladies' Hockey Association held last evening, the chairman (Mr. C. J. Casey) placed on record his appreciation of the assistance given him during the season by the members of the executive committee, players and supporters. • Appreciation was also expressed for the valuable assistance given by Mr. - Epi Shalfoon in connection with the j dances held under the auspices of the ■] Association. , Rotorua H.S.
